imisThe “Athena” Research and Innovation Centre in Information, Communication and Knowledge Technologies is a research and technology body, which was founded under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Development in 2001.

R.C. “Athena” participates in PublicaMundi through the Institute for the Management of Information Systems. IMIS was founded in 2007, with the mission to conduct research in the area of data management and large-scale information systems. In this small time-frame IMIS has been established as one of the leading EU research institutions in big data and semantic Web technologies, i.e. the foundations of the data economy.

IMIS is actively promoting the open data agenda in Greece, having founded geodata.gov.gr (the first open data portal in Greece) and by regularly organizing Open Data days and hackathons in order to democratize open data technologies and tools. Key Personnel

Spiros Athanasiou is a Senior Resercher at IMIS. He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from NTUA, and has worked as a researcher, advisor and project manager in RTD projects of the public and private sector (combined values exceeding 40M€). His research interests include environmental data infrastructures, big data, and crowdsourcing services.

Angelos Tzotsos is a Research Associate at IMIS. His research interests include remote sensing, object-based image analysis, machine learning, geospatial web services, and geospatial data management. He is a member/developer of openSUSE and a Charter member of OSGeo (Release Manager for OSGeo-Live). He has coordinated and developed numerous geospatial applications and is a developer/contributor to various open source geospatial projects (e.g. pycsw, ZOO).

Yiannis Kouvaras is a Research Associate and Senior Architect at IMIS. He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from NTUA, and has 12 years of experience in the system architecture, design, development, integration, and support of complex ICT systems, with emphasis on interoperability, data-intensive applications, web-based systems, and large-scale architectures
